A Happy Hygge Holiday

The holidays are upon us and with the excitement can come a host of overwhelming emotions, activities and people, or sometimes, all of the above. To help save our bodies and minds a little health this year, we encourage you to look to the Danish for some Hygge inspiration.

hygge [noun] [pronounced hoo-ga] the feeling of coziness and contentment evoked by simple comforts, as being wrapped in a blanket, having conversations with friends or family, enjoying food, etc.

Denmark is consistently one of the top countries on the World’s Happiness Report. Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, shares some of their secrets in The Little Book of Hygge. Hygge is all “about savoring the moment” and enjoying “the simple pleasures of good food and good company.” During this holiday season, we encourage you to embody the Hygge Manifesto:

  • ATMOSPHERE “Turn down the lights.”
  • PRESENCE “Be here now. Turn off the phones.”
  • PLEASURE “Coffee, chocolate, cookies, cakes, candy.”
  • EQUALITY “‘We’ over ‘me.’ Share the tasks and the airtime.”
  • GRATITUDE “Take it in. This might be as good as it gets.”
  • HARMONY “It’s not a competition. We already like you. There is no need to brag about your achievements.”
  • COMFORT “Get comfy. Take a break. It’s all about relaxation.”
  • TRUCE “No drama. Let’s discuss politics another day.”
  • TOGETHERNESS “Build relationships and narratives.”
  • SHELTER “This is your tribe. This is a place of peace and security.”
